Posted by: Diane Wilson Flynn (ID *****0139) Date: May 30, 2009 at 14:13:09
  of 1914

Seeking the ancestry and place of birth of Irish emigrants John CAFFRAY and his wife, Elizabeth LEDDY, who were in Canada when their first child was born c. 1831, in New York when their second son was born c. 1834 and in the town of Geddes, near Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York by the time of the 1840 U.S.Census.

The CAFFRAY family was living in the city of Syracuse by the time of the 1850 Census.

Their children were:

1. Thomas CAFFRAY, Mason, b. Canada c. 1831, (Census: 19 in 1850; 21 in 1855; 26 in 1860; 32 in 1870; 40 in 1880), m. Catherine BROGAN;

2. John J. CAFFRAY, Segar Maker, b. NY c. 1834, (Census: 16 in 1850; 20 in 1855; 23 in 1860; 34 in 1870; 40 in 1875; 42 in 1880), m. Martha DODGE, dau. of Sanford;

3. James CAFFRAY, Segar Maker, b. NY c. 1839, (Census: 14 in 1850; 17 in 1855; 21 in 1860) died in the Civil War 3 May 1863;

4. William CAFFRAY, Shoemaker, b. NY c. 1841, (Census: 12 in 1850; 15 in 1855; 19 in 1860; 27 in 1870; 39 in 1880), m. Jane (____);

5. Mary CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1840, (Census: 10 in 1850; 13 in 1855; 17 in 1860)

6. Catherine CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1844, age 11 in 1855;

7. Francis/Frank CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1846, (6 in 1850; “Female,” 9 in 1855; 14 in 1860; 24 in 1870) m. Natalie (____), Frank d. 25 June 1876, supposedly of wounds suffered in the Civil War;

8. P. Andrew CAFFRAY, juvenile delinquent and Segar Maker, b. NY c. 1848, (Census: 4 in 1850; 7 in 1855; 12 in 1860; 21 in 1870), living with mother in 1874;

9. Mary Ann CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1848, age 2 in 1850;

10. Margaret CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1850, (Census: 5 in 1855; 11 in 1860; 17 in 1870; 27 in 1880) m. John HANIFAN, son of Michael HANNAFON and Ellen O'BRIEN c. 1874;

11. Clara Elizabeth CAFFRAY, b. NY c. 1852, (Census: 3 in 1855; 9 in 1860; 22 in 1880; 35 in 1900-"b. Dec 1865"-mother of 2, 0 living; 40 in 1910-mother of 0, 0 living; 50 in 1920; 62 in 1930; 85 in 1949); called "Aunt Lil" by her nieces and nephews. Aunt Lil married Isaac LONG; they had two children, both of whom died young. She apparently always lied about her age. Her grandniece, Marguerite (HANIFAN) WILSON, who knew her, said that all the CAFFRAY women were notorious for lying about their age. The U.S. Census records show that when Clara E. Caffrey Long died 24 Jul 1949, she was about 97, not 85, years old.
