It's located on the east side of Otisco Lake. The Post Office is Marietta and the school district is Marcellus. Amber has its own fire department and the Otisco Lake Community Center is located across the street from it.
"Amber had a post office in 1836, a church, two stores, a tannery, tavern, Samuel Stearns' woolen factory, and ten or twelve dwellings. Franklin Bangs was the physician. In 1886 it had a church, tavern, two stores, blacksmith shop, harness shop, wagon shop and steam sawmill. There were then but fifteen dwellings."

"Otisco Lake Community" provides a visual history of this central New York Finger Lake region and the villages of Amber and Marietta over a 70-year time span (1880s - 1950s), with the concentration of photographs covering the period 1900 to 1935. Two hundred and twenty photographs, postcards and exhibits have been gathered from local historical societies in Otisco, Spafford and Marcellus as well as from more than a dozen families who live in the lake area.'
