I just posted information about the Nathan Gates from Connecticut that you ask about. Perhaps if we pool what we have we'll all have some questions answered!
I descend from Eliphaz B. Gates, first child and son of Nathan S. Gates and Betsey Burnham.
Just within the last week, I found that a news clipping about the 50th anniversary of Eliza Gates and Freeman Corbett had been posted on Ancestry.com. It identifies her parents as Nathan S. Gates and Betsey Burnham.
I also found someone else on Ancestry had posted information about Abby Jane Gates and Almon White Harris. After following census information, I am quite sure, as suggested, that she is also a sister of my Eliphaz. I am happy to share or clarify what I've found.
If any of you have not yet looked thoroughly at Robert Cady Gates' fine genealogy, you must! It can be accessed easily online by googling George Gates of East Haddam Connecticut and Some of His Descendants. (George is our immigrant ancestor.) If you descend from Nathan Sexton Gates, you are descended from 7 Mayflower passengers. Robert's genealogy explains. We have a collateral line descent to the founder of the Mormon Church, which he does not include but I can share if you're interested.
My Eliphaz migrated to Walworth Co. WI before 1850. Sister Mary Anable Gates with husband Amos Hull Thomas followed (he also had brothers there). They are found in 1870 and 1880, but returned to NY soon after. Son Clarence Eugene moved on to KS.
Would like to hear from anyone with shared descent!
Kate (Gates) MacMillan
