Did he migrate to Michigan, and was living there in 1900? If so, his father was James H. Thorn, mother was Mary. They were living in Madison County, NY in 1850, but they were gone from there in 1860. That year, there was a James Thorn of the right age living in Bridgewater, Oneida County, NY, working as a laborer. Nearby was another James Thorn, age 70, who could have been his grandfather.

Am I in the right ballpark? The man living in Madison County in 1850 and two of his brothers were in Shiawassee County, Michigan in 1900. That James was born January 1843 and had children, Charles, Alice, and Frank. Living side by side were his brothers, John and Charles.
