Smiley Family in Oneida Co, NY

I am getting desperate to track my SMILEY FAMILY LINEAGE, as you will see from the following posting.

This is what I do know for sure from various family records;

My GG-Grandmother's married name was SARAH ANN SMILEY, she died in 1908 and was born about 1838 in England. That is all I know of her. Her obituary appeared on 13 Oct 1908 in the Rome Daily Sentinel, she died 3 days earlier, from family records.

If anyone has access to this obituary it might give me more family names for my research. As you will see I do not have much info regarding her or her family members. I am lucky that I have her full (married only) name and her date of death and obit date.

Please contact me regarding her obit at hoffert@mindspring.com

My GG-Grandfather's name may have been James Robert SMILEY or Robert James SMILEY. He was born in either Ireland or Scotland (again from various records and both places are listed on different official records) I do not have a year of birth or death for him.

His death is the only one that is not listed in the family Bible, which leads me to believe that he died shortly before or after the marriage of my G-Grandparents (it is their family Bible) that would be between 1887 and 1908. I cannot pin it down any more than that as I do NOT know when my G-Grandmother received the Bible and began to record the our family records.

Sarah Ann Smiley's death is the FIRST line record and that was in 1908. Her husband is listed as Robert Smiley.

But after finding the 1880 census record for a James & Sarah Ann SMILEY, I think that his name may have been actually James Robert Smiley.
The ages & birth locations of both this James & Sarah Ann Smiley match the known info for my GG-Grandparents.
My G-Grandfather, Samuel Smiley, his wife & their son were also living in Kirkland, Oneida Co, NY at the time of the 1900 census. So I think that James & Sarah Ann (MNU) Smiley were the parents of my G-Grandfather, Samuel Smiley.

My G-Grandfather, Samuel Smiley was born in 1868 in NY(I think Oneida Co, NY). I do not have any sibling info for Samuel Smiley. I do list a few names at the end from the family bible that could possibly be related.

Samuel Smiley, my G-Grandfather married Louise Wust (of Germany) in 1887, in the Moravian Church in Clarks Mill, Oneida Co, NY. James & Louise Smiley lived in Oneida Co, NY in Kirkland, New York Mills and Clarks Mill until abt 1920, when the migrated to CA with the Frank Stillman family, also of Oneida Co, NY.

Samuel and Louise (Wust) Smiley had 3 children all born in Oneida County,
1. William Samuel Smiley, he married a Cathaleen MacAveene (Sp?) in Oneida Co, NY and they also had 2 children born in Oneida Co (this was prior to the entire family migration to CA abt 1920)
2. Eunice Smiley (my grandmother, she married in CA)
3. Alice Smiley (she also married in CA)

There are a few other names in the family Bible that also must relate to the SMILEY family they are as follows;
Kate WILKE she died in 1930 at the age of 70.
William Bauman died in 1940
That is the only info on either of them.

Any info, assistance, or general direction is most appreciated. This is the only set of G-Grandparents I have been unable to research. For the other 3 sets of G-Grandparents I have been able to go back many generations, so I am very frustrated on this side of my family.

So THANK YOU for any assistance that may get me started.

Carrie
