Have you searched the microfiche vital records indexes for New York State? If not, you might want to do that (or find someone to do it for you). They are available in Albany and also in a library in Syracuse--maybe other places, I'm not sure. If you happened to find an entry in there--you'd know you were on the right track and be sure of which town might actually have the record. (Are you 100% sure that this person died in Utica and not one of the outlying towns? This could make a difference what records are available. Also, it's faster to write to the local registrar than to write to the state, I think.)

Do you know where this person is buried? You might try contacting the cemetery to see what information they have.
