wondering about obit lookups in NY...

Hello,

I was so excited to make a new research find on my GRAMLEWICZ line, with an actual date of death listed in the SSDI to help w obit lookup. Then I went to my usual sites to see if anyone could help. Well, I am new to the Nassau site (for gen research, not for me--I grew up there!), so I thought I better look around first and mind my P's and Q's. I discovered that, unlike all the other gen sites for other states and counties that I am familiar with, it appears that one should only do one's own research here. Granted, none of us should expect a free ride all the time. However, years ago (I've been doing research for about 27 yrs now), when someone gave me my first hand up in research, I was so grateful that I've made sure to dish out plenty of my own help, too--consistently, and over the years, and not only to those researching my own lines.

So, I took the advice I read on this site, and started googling the library I want (Bellmore), thinking I could email the librarian and ask for current fees for obit lookups, should that particular branch do such a fee-based service. Well, it appears the libraries don't include what other states do include on their sites: a button to click to "contact librarian." I could only access a chat site IF I happened to be a resident of the area with a bona fide library card. Well, guess what...if I HAD a library card to that library, I would have just gone down there and done it myself! One reason, no doubt, why the first genealogist realized that it is mutually beneficial to help one's fellow gen researcher from time to time, and thus started the volunteer lookup trend: there are just some records that are too hard to get all the time on one's own.

So, though dismayed that LI NY sites don't seem to share that collective-effort spirit, I did notice that there is a gentleman on this forum who seems to be linked to reference librarians in the area. If that person is able to point me to an online site where I can actually inquire about fees to obtain lookups for Newsday in the late 1990s (as this time, I am researching a new descendant find on a branch that has been one of my brick walls, in hopes of finding someone else researching the same line who can work w me on this brick wall) I would greatly appreciate the help.

from an Obituary Daily Times volunteer who has indexed hundreds of obituaries online (accessible for free on rootsweb), and a local volunteer willing to help others with Central Valley, CA, lookups
