Jacob and Fred Klein

Jacob would be my 2nd GG. His son, my GGrandfather, Fred Klein, was born 1859-60 in Buffalo, New York and died in 1936. Fred married my GGrandmother, Mary Anderson Finch, and they had three daughters. In addition, Mary's two sons from her first husband lived with them for a while. I'm trying to determine when Fred left NY and came to Chicago, IL where he met Mary, although it may have been between 1880 and 1892. Fred was listed as the headman for the Stockyards on one of the census records. Fred's death certificate indicated that his father was Jacob, mother's maiden name was Shell but no first name for her was listed.

Census records for Fred Klein indicated that his parents were from Koblenz, Germany. I have no other information on Fred's parents - no date of immigration or naturalization, whether or not he had any siblings, or what he did while in NY.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to research this family's arrival here in the U.S.?
