I am researching my 2nd great-grandmother, Mary R. Stone (b 1824, Wilna, Jefferson, NY, d 1899, Pitcairn, St. Lawrence, NY; m Levi Goodale, 1849 in Wilna, Jefferson, NY).
The family story is that Mary was orphaned at an early age (about 3?), and was adopted by her parents of record, Ezra Stone and his wife Jane (Unknown) Stone. The story goes that Ezra was acquainted with Mary's parents, whose surnames might have been Schofield and Parrish (but spelling and which name goes to which parent is unknown). All I know is that the parents died in an "accident."
Some sources say Ezra might have been born in CT.
I am having a hard time confirming Mary's biological parents. Has anyone else heard this story?
I know that the towns in upstate NY had very few residents back then, so I thought someone out there might have heard a similar tale.
