Any tips on getting NY Death certificates from 1930 up?

Anyone have any tips or know the best way to get death certificates from NY when your relative (in this case my great great grandmother) died in 1973?

I'm trying to find Grace Cassidy's death certificate-she was born June 18, 1884 in New York and died September 29, 1973 in Floral Park, Nassau. I just went to NYC.gov and it basically leads me to VitalChek which will cost me about 50 bucks and also says I need proof I'm related by name on my credit card matching up. There are still two people in my family with that last name but neither are children or spouses of her. Also it never requested a name which makes me nervous. I'm not paying 50 bucks if I'm not even sure if its the right person!

Also, does anyone have any tips for searching for the death date of relatives after 1940? I am looking for the date Peter Francis Cassidy died (born: Birth 4 Apr 1879 in New York, New York) Without anymore census data all I know is that Peter Cassidy was alive in 1940. His son William Thomas died Aug 24th 1959.
