These are things I have found on the net while searching for my Abram Peder Merritt, whom I believe was in the Civil War, also. Would like confirmation of the Abram Merritt that enlisted in 5 Aug 1862 Monroe co, NY, Co C of Reg't 124th. His parents and children. My Abram was born 10 Aug 1847 in New York state and died 11 Jan 1919 in Oscoda co., Michigan.

Wesley Merritt's 2nd wife's father's obit. Family facts only.

Published 20 Jun 1899; New York Times.
Hampton, NH, June 19.- Norman Williams, a prominent lawyer of Chicago died here this evening. Mrs. Merritt, wife of Gen. Wesley Merritt, is a daughter. She, with the General, was at the bedside. Born is Woodstock, VT in Feb 1835.
His ancestors were among the earliest settlers of that state. His father, also a lawyer, was the reporter for the Supreme Court of Vermont.
In 1867 he married Miss Caroline Caton, daughter of Judge Caton [also, of Chicago, I assume].
Besides his wife and Mrs. Laura Merritt, his son, Norman Williams, Jr., was with him at Rye Beach, when he died. He, also, had another daughter, Mary. Laura married Gen. Wesley Merritt, US Army, in London, last Fall, after his return from the Philippine Islands.
Until 3 years ago Mr. Williams enjoyed good health, then attacked with Bright's disease.

MERRITT HALL
This was donated by Mrs. Wesley Merritt as a memorial to her husband after whom the camp was named. This was the enlisted men's club, very commodious and comfortable, with a cafeteria, billiard tables, and reading and lounging room. It was always the home of the library, established by the American Library Association. The camp chaplains had their headquarters there.

published 31 Jan 1918; New York Times.
CAMP MERRITT, NJ, Jan. 30-- Colonel Theodore Roosevelt today dedicated Merritt Hall, established as the soldier's club here be Mrs. Wesley Merritt, widow of the late General Merritt, Indian fighter and civil war veteran. Colonel Roosevelt received an ovation when he spoke, first to 1,000 officers and their relatives in the club house, and later to 4,000 enlisted men in the YMCA building.

The Camp Merritt Monument, located in the geographic center of the former post, was dedicated by General of the Armies John J. Pershing on 30 May 1924. In addition to the dedication address by General Pershing, the Governor of New Jersey, George S. Silzer, addressed the crowd of thousands. Mrs. Laura Williams Merritt, widow and second wife of General Merritt was also present for the dedication.
