Madison County was named in honor of President Madison. When the land was put up for sale a group of about 40 people from Little Compton, Rhode Island sent their agents (Brownell, Tomkins and Simmons) to purchase land for them. They settled in that quarter and that's why it is called the Rhode Island Quarter. Hope this helps.
