My Great, Great Aunt Luthera Converse (ne. Rogers) was a fairly prolific painter and quilter. She moved from Ellisburg, NY to Grand Rapids, MI around 1875, bringing 6 or 7 canvases, some quilts and other pieces with her. We assume that travel prohibited her from bringing more, as well as the fact that she surely gave away many of her portraits and landscapes. If you have an unattributed portrait, landscape or still life dating from the 1820' s to the 1870's, we would love to share our info. L. Converse signed very few of her pieces but has a distinctive style. One of her quilts has been rated as one of the most important in North America by Southbys, another one of the Garden of Eden has been lost and is also being sought . I f you think you may have one of her pieces, please contact me. Converse family info also welcome.
