I’m seeking information about my great-grandfather, William A Bartlett. He was born in northern New York in 1834 and married Altha Jane Wescott in Hammond, St Lawrence, New York on July 28, 1865. They show up on the US Census 1870, living in Morris, Carroll, Missouri. They had four children, Catherine Edith, Warren Lincoln, John Murray and Altha Mable. His wife died in 1879. He appears in the US census if 1880 and 1900. He died in July, 1900. I do not know who his parents were.
While I don’t have good evidence, I’m suspicious that his father and mother were Sargeant and Nancy Bartlett living in northern NY. They had a 15-year-old son, William, listed on a 1850 US census in Alexandria, Jefferson, New York. Sargeant was listed in the US 1840 census in Herkimer, Herkimer, NY. I found a William A Brtlitt with a newly married wife, Catherine, in the US 1860 census living in Orleans, Jefferson, NY (page 19). I’m hoping that the transcription was wrong and that it could have been “Bartlett” rather than “Brtlitt”. I don’t have a maiden name for Catherine, but one scenario is that Catherine died a year or two later and this William married Altha Jane Wescott in 1865 and named his first daughter Catherine (born in 1866) after his first wife.
Any help to solve William’s life in the 1835 to 1865 years would be appreciated!
