FINAL RITES FOR PIONEER RESIDENT
Native of Wisconsin Came To Nebraska
In Covered Wagon, 1879; Services Friday
Final rites for Mrs. Thomas H. Smith, who passed away Wednesday, Febr. 6, were held from the Chapman-Higby chapel Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Paul Porter in charge. Clarabelle Burt, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Whitney at the organ, sang "Beautiful Isle" and "Old Rugged Cross."
In failing health for several years she had been in critical condition since January 8 when she fell in her home, fracturing her right hip.
Katherine Georgia Nichols was born at Broadhead, Wisconsin, May 3, 1863, and passed away at Aurora, Nebr., on February 6, 1946, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 3 days.
She came with her parents to Nebraska in a covered wagon in 1879. The family located on a farm six miles south of Aurora. Here she attended the public schools and grew to womanhood.
She was united in marriage to Thomas H. Smith on September 11, 1884, at Clay Center, Nebr. Eleven children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Smith spent their entire wedded life in or near Aurora. Here they reared their family and won for themselves many fine friends.
Mrs. Smith was converted and joined the Methodist church when a girl of 15 years. After coming to Aurora she placed her membership in the United Brethren church of which she was a member at the time of her death.
Her passing is mourned by her husband; 3 sons, Thomas, Jr. of Aurora, Lester and Floyd of Los Angeles, Calif; 6 daughters, Mrs. Lela Hamilton and Mrs. Cecile Strong of Aurora, Mrs. Nellie Miller of Grand Island, Mrs. Eva Daggett and Mrs. Lila Sellers of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Rosella Ludlow of Marquette; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many friends.
Pallbearers were: F. E. Edgerton, Dennis Saylor, Levi Humrich, Will Shaneyfelt, James Stewart and Clayton Machamer.
Interment was in the Aurora cemetery.

Note: Katherine Georgia Nichols was the daughter of Asa Corbin Nichols, Sr., & Rosella Niles, natives of New York and Ohio. The Nichols actually moved from Wisconsin to Hamilton County in early 1882. On 1 Jun 1880, the census taker found "Kate," 18, with her folks in Spring Grove, Green Co., WI [E.D. #144, p. 204C].

EARLY RESIDENT DIES SATURDAY
Thomas Smith, Sr., Succumbs Saturday
After Long Illness; Rites Tues. P. M.
Thomas H. Smith, 84, a pioneer resident of Hamilton county, and for many years engaged in the barber business, died at his home Saturday where he had been in frail health for several months.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the Chapman-Higby chapel with Rev. Paul Porter of the United Brethren church in charge. Clarabelle Burt accompanied by Mrs. C. L. Whitney, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle."
Thomas H. Smith was born in Princeton, Ill. on Febr. 17, 1863, and died on March 22, 1947, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 5 days.
He was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Nichols on Sept. 13, 1884. Mrs. Smith passed away a little over a year ago.
Those remaining to mourn his loss are his 6 daughters, Mrs. Lela Hamilton, Mrs. Rosella Ludlow and Mrs. Cecile Strong of Aurora, Mrs. Nellie Miller of Grand Island, Mrs. Eva Daggert and Mrs. Lila Sellers of Spokane, Wash.; 3 sons Floyd of Los Angeles, Calif., Thomas Jr. and Lester of Aurora. A number of grandchildren and many friends.
Pallbearers were: F. E. Edgerton, D. H. Saylor, Levi Humrich, Clayton Machamer, Claude Otto and Guy Thompson. Committal was in the Aurora cemetery.
