In the course of my Gilman genealogy research I came in contact with Scott Mclaughlin who is doing a dissertaion on canal boatmen. Many residents of New York made their living on the lakes, canals and rivers. He does have registration and Captain records. He is looking for more personal information on the boatmen, their families and their lives. Family stories and especially pictures of the boats and the boatmen. His hope is to some day have his research published as a book.
