Mary, Thank you for this information. I am a descendant of David Aird and Margaret Crombie. I suspect that George Crombie married twice, first to the mother of his children who immigrated with him from Scotland, and second to Jane, and Englishwoman, probably in Albany. You mentioned that Margaret had a half sister, and she could have been from the second marriage.

The birthplace of Margaret's mother is shown in the 1880 and 1900 cenusus, and both are Scotland. Jane is in both censuses with birthplace in England. This could be a mistake (if Jane was Margaret's mother), but I am inclined to think it is accurate since it was recorded the same way twice. Also, in 1900 Jane lived in the same household with Margaret, that of David Aird, so it is ulikely they would make an error on the birthplace of Margaret's mother (if she was actually Jane). I conclude from this that Margaret's mother and Jane Crombie are not the same person, based on their place of birth.

In the 1900 census, Jane lives with David and Margaret, and in the relationship column it says SM. Could this mean stepmother? I have not seen the original, just the transription, and I wonder if anything else was written, because she was technically David's SM-in-law.

Jane was born in 1815 and was a couple years older than George. The passenger list of "Martha's Vinyard", which I had not seen before, says that George's wife at that time, Elizabeth, was age 34 (in 1850) and younger than him. The birthdates for George and Elizabeth are not known with any certainty, to my knowledge, but it does seem strange that Elizabeth would be younger than George and Jane would then appear older than him if they were the same person.

Also, there is Jane's obituary. It does not mention any surviving children, only that she was the widow of George. Most obits that I have read from that time at least mention the surviving children, and this may be another clue that Margaret was her step-daughter.

It would be very helpful to have a record of Jane's time in the US or years married for any particular time, to see if she married after 1850 or immigrated at a different time than George. I have not found this information in the available records. Since he was Scottish and she was English, however, I consider it more likely they immigrated separately and met in Albany.

You mentioned that Jane died in 1907 and I thought perhaps it was 1901. To my knowledge, she is not in the 1905 census, she was born in March, 1815, and she was 86 when she died.

The 1860 census is very interesting, in that George's wife was age 40 (born about 1820), from Scotland, but named Jane. I don't know if that was the first or second wife, or if there really was only one wife named Jane/Elizabeth. Thank you for sharing all of this.
