Thank you so much for your posting. I can't find Wm Henry Hopkins in the 1850 or 1860 census in either NY or Iowa. I don't know if he and/or his parents stopped off at any state in between for a time.
In the 1870 Iowa Census he is listed as Henry Hopkins so I'm thinking his father's name was William and the son went by Henry. In the 1880 census he's listed as William so perhaps his father died and he then took his first name back. His mother was from Holland and they have very traditional naming practices.
If you could recheck the 1855 Erie Co. census again for a Henry Hopkins(b Feb 13, 1838) age 20 and a William Hopkins say 40-60 I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much again for your help.
