Dutchess County Historian Appointment - URGENT!!!!

It seems that all researchers out there are not aware of the crisis in our Dutchess County Archives and the fact that we are without a Historian in this our Quad year. Please see message and sign the petition:

To: Dutchess County residents

Last fall (2008) Dutchess County Historian Stanley Mersand retired for medical reasons. It is now almost a year later-- yet inexplicably our County Executive has refused to hire a new County Historian.

Section 30.08 of the Dutchess County Charter states that, "There shall be a County Historian, who shall be appointed by the County Executive, subject to confirmation by the County Legislature."

As we are all well aware by now, this year (2009) marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's sailing up our river here in this valley.

So-- if you agree that our County Executive should delay no longer in hiring a new Dutchess County Historian, sign on to this petition, pass it along to all you know, and send letters to countyexec@co.dutchess.ny.us and countylegislators@co.dutchess.ny.us!

County Legislator (Clinton/Rhinebeck) read more and sign on line at http://www.petitiononline.com/hirehist/petition.html

Signatures are urgently needed before Wednesday 9/9 at 11 am! If you care about preserving the records YOU need to research your ancestors, please take a moment to sign NOW.

Thank you!
