No, I actually hadn't thought of the town clerk, which is weird. I should have thought of that first, huh?
I do have the birth certificate, but the clerk's office would have a death record, wouldn't they? I live in WA state, and my only thought was 'maybe there was an obit', and I can't get East for a while.
I guess I wasn't thinking too clearly when I posted that message.
I had just discovered a box of Mom's things (stored at another sister's, when Mom died in the 90's). I found Mary Ruth's birth certificate and a stack of pretty little cards congratulating them on the birth of their new little girl. Then there were a few, dated about a week after, trying to be encouraging in the face of their little girl being ill. (no mention of what was wrong) Then there was the stack of sympathy cards and letters about the loss of their precious baby.
This was all 11 years before I was even born and I hadn't known much about it. But finding her birth cert., and those cards so lovingly saved, brought it home to me. It made it real. I wish Mother and Dad were here so I could hug them.
Thank you for helping me to get my mind in gear.
******I can look up records in Whitman Co., WA. I get to the county seat a few times a month. No charge. It's just my way of giving back for all the help I have received from so many folks on this site.******
