Folks -
I cannot answer your questions, but can add a HOUGHTALING to the mix of the same time period. Perhaps there will be something else here to help you research further.

Nancy HOUGHTALING b. 29 Sep 1818 Davenport, Madison Co NY d. 20 Nov 1903 Vermontville, Eaton Co MI. “The Vermontville Echo,” 25 Nov 1903 records her date and place of birth. There are some possible discrepancies, however, with what a family researcher had who lived in MI.

Nancy md 30 Sep 1837 James M. SURINE b. 10 May 1814 Kent, Putnam Co NY, d. 2 Oct 1885 Vermontville, Eaton Co MI.

The SURINE family was definitely in Walton by 1830, as they were censused there, and did not move to MI until late 1850s. James M. SURINE was a preacher. SURINEs were members of the Oxbow Baptist church in Walton.

I research SURINE/SIRRINE and unfortunately do not have any additional HOUGHTALING info "going back."

Hope this has some value!
