McWilliams family in Kortright
Posted by: Rebecca MacAllester (ID *****0860) Date: September 19, 2003 at 11:54:24

Hello all!

I am descended from John McWilliams who was b. in Ireland in 1763 and died in Kortright Dec 14, 1818. I know his wife's name is Mary and that she was born abt 1773 in Ireland and died Feb 4, 1828 in Kortright. Other than that, I have no further information on John or Mary. I do have some other info on his descendants in Delaware County, thanks to Del Co's US Gen Web site. What I have is below, but I was wondering if anybody has anything else on this family -- or on Henrietta Mills (last name?) who married James McWilliams (John's son)Oct 3, 1833 and were parents of Nancy McWilliams who married Charles Champlin?

Any snippet or tidbit would be greatly appreciated. My descendancy report for John is below for reference -- any corrections would be great, too.

Thanks!

- Rebecca MacAllester

PS -- here's a HUGE PLUG for Delaware County's Us GenWeb site. There's a wealth of info there, and it's an example of what a GenWeb site should be. It's been a great help because I found almost everything I have on this family on that site.

Descendants of John McWilliams

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 MCWILLIAMS was born 1763 in Ireland, and died December 14, 1818 in Kortright, Delaware, NY. He married MRS MARY MCWILLIAMS. She was born 1773 in Ireland, and died February 04, 1828 in Kortright, Delaware, NY.

Notes for JOHN MCWILLIAMS:
In 1800 census, John had 2 boys under 10, 1 man 26-44 (himself), 3 girls under 10 and 1 woman 26-44 (Mary). The only girls I know of are Nancy and Elizabeth, not sure who the 3rd is yet. One of the little boys will be David, but not sure yet if the other is Benjamin or Samuel.

In 1810, John had 3 boys under 10, 1 10-15, 1 16-25, 1 man 45 or over (himself), 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 woman 26-44 (Mary)

in the Munsell book:

"John McWilliams and his son David were early settlers [of Kortright]. Mr. McWilliams had a large family, but they have all died. [He] took up the lot north of Brownell farm"

Notes for MRS MARY MCWILLIAMS:
The guardianship of Her and John's children took place in June 1827, but she didnt pass until Feb 1828. She must have already been too ill to take care of them, so it looks like their older brother David McWilliams took care of them and became guardian.

Found Charles R. Champlin on Civil War Service Records index at www.ancestry.com...he served 100 days in 20th State Militia, but left before it changed names and continued with the war.

He was on the board of trustees for district 2 in Harpersfield --the school on Gun Hollow Road and Odell Lake - in 1855. in 1879 and 1883 he served on the Delaware County grand jury.

Gun House Hill Rd isnt far from Whiskey Hollow Road. The farm that Donna Champlin lives on and inherited is on Whiskey Hollow Road, and it looks like the McWilliams family was in that area too --James McWilliams was a trustee for the school on the corner of Whiskey Hollow and Dibble Roads.
