Your greatgrandparents are on the 1920 census in Cortland, Cortland Co. indexed as McGee. William`s age is given as 28 birthplace NY with parents birthplce NY. Effie is 24, also NY. There is a daughter Helen who is age 7 months (this census was taken in Jan.) William`s occ. is polisher in auto manufaturer.
There is a WW1 draft reg. card at Ancestry.com for William Magee, b. Aug. 29, 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. His current address is was given as 47 Union St., Cortland, NY & his occ. was polisher. His only dependent was his wife, no name given. The card was filled out in June of 1917 in Cortland.
I think the 1920 census record was in error on both age & birthplace for William, common on the census. If your ggrandparents gravestones gave death dates (even just the year) & you know where they died, you can try to get the death certificates which may give parents names. There is a William Magee on the SSDI who died in Oct. 1970. His birthdate is given as 13 Aug. 1889. His last residence is given as 10510 Briarcliff Manor, Westchester, New York. If this is your William, you can send for his SS5 application for card form which will give both parents names.
