Does anyone know more about the Benjamin Haight mentioned below? --------ARTICLE, 27 NOV 1931-------- Jonathan (4) Haight (John 3, 2, Simon 1) married Susanna Theal, daughter of Ebenezer, before May 27, 1747 (N.Y. Wills Volume IV, page 128) and she was probably the mother of his children. He was living at Courtland in 1747. His children (probably an incomplete list) were: Anna (5), born Feb. 27, 1725, died June 30, 1796, married, May 18, 1763, Joseph Strang, as his second wife (New York Genealogical and Biographical Records, Volume 21, page 135); Jonathan, born 1736, Cortland, died 1780 (New York Wills, Volume IX, page 259, Also D.A.R. Lineage Book, No. 78); Benjamin, living in Connecticut in 1780. Two other sons have assigned to Jonathan (4), Stephen and Samuel. There has been some question as to the parentage of Jonathan Haight of Courtland Manor. Judging from the list of Jonathan’s children he was born in 1700 or earlier. That being the case he must have belonged to the John Hoyt branch of the family, for aside from Samuel (4) Haight, all the sons of Samuel (3) Haight (Nicholas 2, Simon 1), according to the census of Flushing, Long Island, for 1698, were living with their parents unmarried (E.B. Callaghan, document History of N.Y., published 1850, Volume I, page 435.) ------THE FOLLOWING JOHN (4) HAIGHT WAS THE BROTHER OF THE JONATHAN (4) HAIGHT ABOVE------ John (4) Haight (John 3, 2, Simon 1) was of White Plains in 1730 and was living in 1760 (N.Y. Gen. and Biog. Rec. Vol. 58. p. 108). M.E.H. calls my attention to the fact that he and brother Samuel were Presbyterians as shown by a petition to the Governor of Connecticut. Samuel (4) Haight (John 3, 2, Simon 1) of White Plains had a wife Hannah and was living in 1773 when he deeded to his son James certain land that he had received from his father (N.Y. Gen. & Biog., Rec. Vol. 54, p. 135). As previously stated he was a Presbyterian. ------ARTICLE, 8 JUL 1931------ Samuel (4) Haight (John 3, 2, Simon 1) is probably the man who witnessed the will of Rev. Christopher Bridges of Rye, May, 1718. I should judge that he the same Samuel Haight (Hoit, Hait) who owned s small tract to the south of John (3) Hoit at White Plains in 1721, and probably the same who owned a much larger tract a little to the west, 1737 to 1748. This seems to be the land which John (3) bequeathed to Samuel (4) in his will. Apparently this was the Samuel Haight who is mentioned as having bequeathed land to his nephew John . . . His will has not been found. Joseph (4) Haight (John 3, 2, Simon 1) died 1748. ------ARTICLE, 16 MAR 1931------ John (3) Hoit or Haight (John 2, Simon 1) lived at Rye, N.Y., all his life; was an extensive land owner; took a prominent part in town affairs and was a member of the Established Church. From him were descended the most prominent Haights of the Revolutionary times. In his will he is called John Haight, gentleman. He died before March 1727, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and children, John, Samuel, Jonathan, Joseph (who married Sarah ------ by 1737), Elizabeth, Winnie, and Mary. Joseph (4) Haight died at Rye . . . leaving sons Henry, Cornelius, Joseph, and daughters Elizabeth Brown, Sarah, Philena. Notify Administrator about this message?
