I lived near the Cortand County Children's Home while groing up. Several kids were in my classes at Pomeroy Street School an later at the Jr-Sr high school. Pomeroy was the school the kids from the children's home attended til 6th grade. In 7th grade they attended Cortland Jr-Sr high school which was then on Central Ave. where the County office Bldg. now is.
Mr. and Mrs. Bannister were the homes "parents" in the mid to late 50's. I remember the kids called her "Mom" Bannister. Some children were from other counties other than Cortland.
This was under the Cortland Co. welfare dept. It was closed in the late 50's when the foster care program was implemented, but I believe some kids were relocated to other counties children's homes.
It was located right next to the Tioughnioga River just within City limits being to the west of the Port Watson St. bridge to the North side of the road.
