Cortland County Surrogate’s Office, Book G, pp. 504-5
In the name of Lord Amen: I Elias Bowen of the Village of Cortland of the County of Cortland and the State of New York being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail + _____itory life, do therefore make and publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament, that is to say First: After all my lawful debts are paid and discharged the remainder of my estate, real and personal, I give bequeath and dispose of as follows, to wit: to my six children Ann Eliza, Harriet P., Sally E., Charles W., William C., and Maria L. two hundred Dollars each: To my two daughters Charlotte A. and Angeline S. fourteen hundred dollars each: And I give, bequeath and devise all the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate to my beloved Wife: In regard to my Daughter Mary C. to whom I bequeath nothing for the reason that she is otherwise provided for I deem it appropriate in this place and manner to record my deliberate and cherished wish making no doubt that my family on and all will scrupulously observe the suggestion and faithfully carry out my intention concerning this when in the imbecile and dependent condition she can no longer share the sympathies of a deceased father. As the Executor of my Father-in-laws estate and the natural Guardian of my afflicted child I took into my hands the legacy which was left her by her Grand-Father, which I still hold for her use + benefit. My wish is that she should remain with her mother during her natural life and be charged the amount of the interest of her legacy from her support and that after the death of her mother, she be taken care of being non compos ____ by one of her Sisters or Brothers, at the discretion of her mother, or as the children shall agree among themselves, and that the individual into whose hands she shall fall, being duly qualified, on giving the required security, shall have the legacy belonging to her amounting to one thousand dollars for that purpose.
Likewise I make constitute and appoint my wife to be the sole and only Executrix of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this fourth day of April in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six.
