The only plausible scenario I can come up with that might show a connection between the Batchellor Sherman family of New Berlin and the Holmeses is the following: Perhaps Betsey Holmes Burlingame Sherman and Hannah Holmes Sherman were married to Elliot Sherman's uncles. Peter Sherman b. 2Jan1795 (Hannah Holmes' age) and his brother Stephen Sherman b.26Jan1784 (Betsey Holmes' age) came to New Berlin ca. 1814. Stephen Sherman's wife Phoebe Tallman may have died between 1826 and 1830, leaving him free to marry the widowed sister of his brother's wife. If these are not the right guys, then you must be looking for another Sherman line.
The "Descendents of Philip Sherman of Portsmouth, RI" is a thorough and well researched genealogy. It can be found in many genealogical libraries.
