I am looking for information on these long-time Elmira residents: Edith Louise HILL - my great-aunt; born Jan. 8, 1884; died around 1971. Was a secretary for the Elmira Board of Education. Supporter of the Elmira Humane Society. Did anyone know her? Ariel Standish THURSTON - Born June 11, 1810; died after 1884. Was a Chemung Co. judge who raised several children in Elmira. Clarissa THURSTON - born Feb. 26, 1801; died Jan. 6, 1884. An early advocate of higher education for women, she was instrumental in founding the Elmira Female Seminary. Ariel Thurston's sister. Frank Ward ROSS - born July 10, 1859; died Apr. 21, 1923. Practicing physician in Elmira for 40 years; raised four children there. I have letters written by Philomela THURSTON (born Apr. 11, 1795 in Rowley, Mass.; died Sept. 16, 1849 in Poughkeepsie, NY), who was Ariel's and Clarissa's sister. Philomela sailed to Bombay in 1817 and married a missionary there. For some reason the letters she wrote home passed out of the Thurston family and were given to my Aunt Edith Hill - probably by either Ariel's descendants, or those of Frank Ward Ross, who was Philomela's grandson-in-law. I am writing a book about all this, and am eager to learn as much as I can about the above people. Specifically, I would love to solve the mystery of why the letters left the Thurston family.
