I think it interesting to consider their relationship to the railroad industry. Dunkirk was the western terminal of the New York and Erie Railroad when service began from New York City on 15 May 1851. Marshall was the central point (between Detroit and New Buffalo, near Chicago) and headquarters of the Michigan Central Railroad which began service in 1843. Dunkirk and Detroit were connected by lake steamers from 1851.
