Malaria associated with mill-pond mosquitoes was a problem until New York State outlawed mill ponds in 1900. Until then Fredonia had three mill ponds on Canadaway Creek associated with Norton's, McClure's, and Colburn's flour mills. The last two were at the Creek's intersection with Main St. The first was located at the Water Street intersection.
