One branch of my Swedish ancestors lived in Chautauqua County (Jamestown, mostly). It was really easy to find clues to their Swedish origins. It was the easiest branch of all of mine to research. I found parishes of birth in Sweden in the Swedish American church records found at the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. They have a website but their extensive collection of records is NOT online. We need to go there to research or pay them to research for us. http://www.augustana.edu/swenson/ They have records that are difficult or even impossible to find elsewhere and many of us have found the origins in Sweden using their archive. If your ancestor joined one of their churches, the parish of birth is usually listed and records were kept in the parish. Even if they didn't join the church, they usually had baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and funerals in those churches and that is useful information. They have these microfilmed church records for Chautauqua County. They have these microfilmed Swedish American newspapers for Jamestown. I use them for obituaries. It is not hard to pick out names, dates, and locations from the Swedish obituaries. These newspapers can be borrowed through interlibrary loan. ========================================================= The Swedish-American newspapers on microfilms in the index below are available to borrow via interlibrary loan throughout the United States. Please contact your local library if you are interested in placing a request. You need to supply your library the following information: Title of the newspaper The specific years you need for your research (note that some titles cover several decades and may be contained on several microfilms) Inform your library that the requests can be sent directly via OCLC ("ICY"), fax 309 794-7230, or via mail to Augustana College Library, 639 38th Street, Rock Island IL 61201-2296 (not directly to the Swenson Center). ====================================================== State City of publication Title Dates on microfilm First Vol on film Dates published Film # NY JAMESTOWN FOLKETS RÖST JAN 14 1876-JAN 26 1877;MAR 15 1883-MAY 1 1884 Vol 2 no 66 OCT 1874 - MAY 1 1884 10210 NY JAMESTOWN ÖSTERNS VÄXTARE NOV 28 1889 - NOV 1890 Vol 2 no 1 NOV 1888 - FEB 1891 10260 NY JAMESTOWN SKANDIA NOV 25 1909 - AUG 29 1946 Vol 8 no 96 NOV 1909 - 1946 10270 NY JAMESTOWN VÅRT LAND DEC 4 1890 - SEP 10 1920 Vol 3 no 2 DEC 1890 - 1920 10300 NY JAMESTOWN WÅRT NYA HEM NOV 29 1889 - AUG 28 1891 Vol 17 no 4 MAY 1884 - AUG 1891 10310 They also have a book about Swedes in Jamestown. It is called "Saga of?/from? the Hills". That book has an index but the index is far from complete. There are people listed briefly in the book who are not listed in the index. There is a directory of Swedes in Jamestown which is from 1909 or so, give or take a few years. It is on microfilm you can order from any Family History Center. Many Swedes were buried in Lakeview Cemetery. Their earlier records are on microfilm and those records include what appears to be a death certificate. It is often very informative. (I have heard that Lakeview Cemetery is very helpful, so contact them. You can google their contact information.) I learned a lot of useful information from the microfilmed marriage APPLICATIONS. I think I had to search the Family History Library Catalog under the name of the county to find the film numbers to order. I sent away for some English language obituaries when I knew at least the month and year of death. This link explains the details. http://www.prendergastlibrary.org/obitform.html Also check out the state censuses, such as the New York State Censuses for 1892, 1905, 1915, and 1925. (I assume you've already used the Federal Censuses in years ending with 0.) Good luck! Judy Notify Administrator about this message?
