Below are the census records. It appears that Alexander`s wife, who is with him on the 1870, may have traveled back to Scotland around 1880 & then returned. She is not with him in 1880 & on the 1900 census it says she has been in the US for 20 years. At http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/frameset_search.asp
if you do a search for Alexander Happell, you`ll find a marriage record from 1867 in Ayr for an Alexander Happell & Anne Forsythe. Also if you search for Margaret Happell with Alexander as father you will find a record for a birth in Ayr for Nov. 1867 to this couple. Probably your family.
