Dick, I checked the 1850 census for Garfield in Cattaraugus Co. The only one in the county is in New Albion: a Mary Garfield who is the head of household & has four young children. I went to 1840 & the only Garfield in the county is a Charles in New Albion. In his household were 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70 & 1 female 60-70. The 20-30 year old here is probably the future husband of Mary Garfield. That doesn`t help you with his given name, though. The 1850 census record is hard to read;I hope I have deciphered the children`s names correctly.
