My name is Randal J. Loy, and I am researching the histories of the major memorial gifts in the Nave of the church I attend, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal), Kansas City, Missouri.
Right now, I am researching the life of Robert Nelson Horatio Spencer, who was Rector of our church from 1917 through 1930, when he became the Bishop of the Diocese of West Missouri. It was through his efforts, from 1930 through 1935, that our church became the Cathedral church of the Diocese in October of 1935.
Robert Spencer was born in Broome County in Colesville on February 18, 1877. I am seeking information on his family. Although a biography of Bishop Spencer's life was printed in 1958, while he was still living, it is sparse on information on his family, and even less informative with dates. I am seeking assistance in confirming the information I have and obtaining the information I do not have. If anyone can assist me, I would greatly appreciate it, as I am informed by the local Historian that I cannot receive any information from him unless I pay $10.00 per hour (RIDICULOUS!) This is a volunteer project for which I am not receiving any remuneration, nor do I have a budget from the church. It is purely an act of love, and something I would like to give back to the church. I am also going to have to raise the funds for printing this book (about $33,000).
Robert Spencer's father and mother:
Nelson Horatio Spencer b. 1835? - d. ? (The last time he appears in the biography is 1904, but there is no further mention of him, or his death.)
Hannah E. Pratt? Spencer b. 1837? d. Sept. 1891? (I'm not certain that Pratt was her maiden name, but I believe that it was, as her brother is mentioned in the biography and his surname was "Pratt". If I read the biography correctly, she died sometime in September or October of 1891.)
Irving Spencer, who was a teenager when Robert was born in 1877, need birth and death years.
Guy Spencer, who was 7 years years old when Robert was born, so maybe born c. 1870? need death year.
Nettie Eleanor Spencer, who was 3 years old when Robert was born, so maybe born 1874? need death year. (The last mention of Robert's family in his book is when he goes back to see his father and brothers in New York from Kansas in 1904. There is no mention of his sister at that point, so I don't know if she was already dead, or what the reason was that he did not see her then.)
I'm also looking for the birth and death years of a man whose name appears as "Charles" Kingsley in the biography. He owned a cheese factory in 1891-1892 where Robert had his first employment. I didn't find any Charles Kingsley listed in any cemeteries in Broome County, but I did find a William S. Kingsley (1851-1927) and a Henry P. Kingsley (1860-1923). Can anyone assist in this matter?
I'm appealing to anyone there who can find these important dates for me. I do not have access to Ancestry.com, which evidently would be of great assistance, according to your County Historian. If there are any written accounts, obituaries, information, or anything else which might give me insight into this family that you would be kind enough to share with me, I would appreciate hearing from you at my e-mail: RandalJLoy@gmail.com.
Thank you so very much!
