D. : I rented a microfilm of the directory that I wanted through my local LDS (aka mormon) family history center. If you haven't used this resource, I highly recommend it. You don't need any affiliation with them, and they do not inquire about your beliefs. These local "centers" are sometimes not much more than a microfilm reader in a small room, but through them, you can tap into the vast records in Salt Lake City (for something like $3.25 per film rented). the website to explore is www.familysearch.org. This will tell you where the center nearest you is, as well as catalog their holdings. Another option, depending upon where you live, is the NARA, National Archives and Records Administration. I'm lucky to have a branch nearby. They don't have such a vast selection (unless you are near DC, I guess), but they are free. I suppose local historical societies might also have some of this info, too. City directories are not absolutely complete, or without errors, but they can be a great tool for locating people in census records. It worked for me! Hope this was of some help. Happy hunting! Best wishes, joanne
