Helen, I found a James E. Lilly on the 1930 census who may be yours. I was not able to find him in 1920. I checked the 1880 & there are two James Lillies/Lillys b. 1864 in NY but the parents bp do not match the 1930 James. You can check the 1880 yourself at www.familysearch.org. Perhaps you can tell if one of them is yours.
