We are looking for the descendant lines of Jacob and Betsey (HALL) VANAMBURGH. They married 1841or 42. Jacob of Burns, Allegany Co NY, was born in Bath, Steuben Co NY (late Dec 1822 or 1 Jan 1823) and Betsey W Hall was born in NY Sept 1823. Born to them in NY were: Celestia Amelia 1843, Rebecca 1845 and Olive Emily 1847. Born to them in Pampas, DeKalb Co was Matilda April or May
1850. They went to Berrien, MI and then Rock Co, WI. Three and a half year old Matilda and infant child died and are buried in Rock Co WI Nov 1853. From there they went to Westfield and Reedsburg in Sauk Co WI were Elisa Elvira 1855 and Louisa/Lovina Susan April 1857 were both born. To Seaward in Kendall Co IL after WI. There to them were born Harriet 1859 (named for Betsey’s mother, Harriet (JONES) HALL) and Jacob Leroy 1860. We have not found an 1870 Census for them, but we do know that they arrived in Lexington (Crockwell’s addition) in West Anamosa, Jones Co. IA in 1871 where they purchased lots 40 & 41 at the corner James and Main Streets. On 24 June 1872 daughter, Elvira married Lewis EMBERSON on testimony of Louis EMBERSON. Daughter, Louisa (Lovina) married 16 May 1873 to Frank Wallace SMITH and to them was born 2 April 1874 in Marion, Linn Co IA. Bertha L SMITH. On 24 May 1876, an ill Jacob VANAMBURGH transferred the deed to Betsey. His burial date was 17 March 1877 Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa, Jones Co IA. and is listed in the Iowa D.A.R. Gen. Data Vol 20 W.P.A. Jones Co Cemetery Book. On 6 Feb 1880 granddaughter, Jessie May SMITH was born in Marion, Linn Co, IA. Then on 4 March 1880 Betsey (HALL) VANAMBURGH sold her Anamosa property
to Elizabeth AKERS. Betsey VANAMBURGH was not found on the 1880 Census. On 13 March 1883 grandson, Harry Leroy SMITH was born delivered by midwife /grandmother Betsey TAFT (maiden name HALL) in Morgan. Woodbury Co, IA. Two months later on 15 May, Betsey’s son , Jacob Leroy VANAMBURGH of Anamosa Iowa married Alice M. HENION of Anamosa. His parents : Jacob VANAMBURGH and Betsey HALL. Her parents: O. (C or E.) HENION and Clarissa STILES. Witness: Betsey TAFT. When and where did Betsey marry TAFT? On 7 May 1899 Betsey’s son in law, Frank SMITH died in Battlecreek, Maple township, Ida Co, IA and daughter, Lovina (VANAMBURGH) SMITH married George Palmer WARREN 22 March 1901 in Ida Co IA On the license Lovina lists her mother’s name as Betsey HOUK. Evidently TAFT died and HOUK was the 3rd husband, Betsey (TAFT or HOUK) has not been found on the 1890 nor 1900 census. However in searching for her son Jacob and wife Alice M. (HENION) VAMAMBURGH, we have discovered an 1889/90 Omaha, Douglas Co, NE. Directory listing Mrs Alice M VANAMBURGH , Mrs Betsy HOUK and Mr Lewis E.EMBERSON. We haven’t done any further research, but it is possible that they are who we think they are. We still know nothing about the VANAMBURGH daughters: Celestia Amelia, Rebecca, Olive Emily, Harriet, their marriages and descendants. Would also life to know about Lewis E and Elisa Elvira (VANAMBURGH) EMBERSON and Jacob and Alice (Henion) VANAMBURGH descendants . Also, where and when did Betsey marry Mr Houk ( after 1883 and before 1889 ???).
