John SMITH of Rensselaerville. Dead end advice sought.
Posted by: Peter Blood (ID *****1743) Date: December 06, 2011 at 08:19:00
  of 1785

I am researching John SMITH. I know. There are lots of them. Mine settled in Rensselaerville by 1810 and died there 1864. He married about 1802 place unknown Phebe Bolton. She was born 1783 in Stephentown, Rensselaer, NY. They named their first born Rensselaer Smith.

I have not been able to figure out who John's parents were or where he came from. Based upon conflicting census data for him and his children, he was born about 1784 in NY, CT, or RI. I suspect the latter, but it's just a hunch.

Any suggestions for identifying his origins?
