I found this at the Nevada Historical Society here in Reno. Sparks Tribune August 29, 1928 page 1 col 3 Chas. P. Ferrell Passes At Reno. Charles P. Ferrel, sheriff of Washoe county for fourteen years, passed away at his ranch home near Reno yesterday morning at the age of 62. He had been ill for some time, and spent almost twelve months in California in the hopes of benefiting his health but to little avail. Born in Salem, Oregon, Ferrel came to Nevada as a young man and had been a resident of the state for more than 40 years. He was a horseshoer by trade, purchasing the business of W.H. Coughlin, which he conducted for a long period. H was an expert at his trade. In 1903 he entered the employ of the Reno police department. In 1904 he was first elected sheriff and served the county in that capacity for 14 years. He was elected seven times, with only one interruption in serice, when he was defeated by A.A. Burke in 1914. He was again elected following the expiration of Burke's term, serving two terms until 1926. Two years ago he sought the nomination but was defeated. He was skilled in trailing down law breakers and took part in the last recorded conflict with Indians in Nevada in 1911, following the killing of three sheepmen of Modoc county, California, in High Rock canyon near Eagleville by Indian Mikes gang. Ferrel was among those from Reno who took part in trailing down the Tracy bandits in Oregon 25 years ago after following the men for two weeks. His brother, a guard at the Oregon state prison was killed during the break. He was a Republican in politics and took an active part in many city and county campaigns. He was a member of Reno lodge No. 13, F. and A.M. and Washoe Camp No, 407 Woodmen of the World. Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. Lottie Ferrel, are two brothers, George W. and James H. Ferrel of Salem, Oregon In the card file at the Nevada Historical Society there are more newspaper mentions for him also. If you do a "google" book search you will find him listed in the Washoe County Sheriffs Office history dated 2003 on page 10 and also in the History of Nevada by Sam Post Davis 1913 on page 1174 - his bio.
