Hi, Arline, Thank you for the taking the time to glean all these details on Fr. Domenick Monteverde's life. Fr. Domenick was from near Genoa (Northern Italy) as was my great-grandfather, also called Domenico Monteverde. They were born 15 years apart (my ancestor around 1852 and Fr. Monteverde around 1837). And they both lived in Brooklyn, NY, in their final years, although separated again by some decades. Another odd thing for that era: Both Dominicks lived in Northern Ireland for a period of time. Fr. Monteverde was ordained at All Hollows in Dublin and our Domenico left Belfast, where his mother owned a ship chandler's office, and was in Manhattan by 1870 or so. Our Domenico also seemed to have sympathized with the Fenians (who wanted a Free Ireland) and lost his inheritance in Belfast as a result. (He named a son Abraham Lincoln Monteverde, after another freedom fighter of that time.) It has been difficult tracing our Domenico to his origins in Italy, so I thought I'd try to trace Fr. Monteverde and see if they don't come from the same town. Italian naming would indicate they may have shared the same grandfather. But in the process I've gotten even more interested in Fr. Monteverde in and of himself. I doubt there were many other Italians in Nevada at that time. I wonder where I would look for articles on him or any papers he might have left. Do you know whether Nevada was under the California archdiocese at that time? Again - thanks so much for these important facts. Ann Notify Administrator about this message?
