Deeth, the 1900s

I am researching my husband's family. His g-father left a wife and children in Alturas CA sometime between 1900 and 1916 and subsequently died in Deeth in 1916 at the age of 43. I wonder if there was a reason for his going to Deeth or if it was just random. What was happening there at that time? Looks like it was mainly ranching. Any leads or ideas would be appreciated.
