Chas Carroll drowned in Humboldt R.1849

According to my ggrandfather James Carroll, his father Charles Carroll drowned in the Humboldt River in 1849 while trying to get to California. Any ideas of where I might look for info? I know that newspapers in Nevada were about 5 years away. Might there be a grave? Couldn't find anything in a smattering of cemeteries in Nevada. Charles was supposedly from the County Clare in Ireland, came over to the U.S. about 1840 with his wife Susan McFadden of the county Donegal and young James, as well as younger brother Dennis. Possibly landed in Pennsylvania, where daughter Sarah born in the 1840's. Family moved to Missouri by 1848, when younger brother Dan was born. Widow Susan and family stayed in Cooper and Saline counties in Missouri.
