The name Nutting its meaning and origins

My Nuttings are mostly from Chislet, a small village in Kent, UK and date from 1683 - so far. I have found a reference to a Johannes Knotte, a pig farmer from Chislet, or from an area nearby, in the late 13th century. Perhaps there is a connection.
In a book 'Colvers of Hallamshire' by David Nutting (1988) he suggests the following 'The origin of the family name (Nutting) is probably attributable to Saxon or Scandinavian sources. The ending 'ing' is usually accepted to mean 'son of' or 'ingas' meaning 'place of' or 'gift to'. Knud is a surname frequently encountered in Norway ... son of Knud is more often seen written as Knudsen. The Anglo-Saxon word meaning bold or daring is noth; similarly in 8th century German, not, nuti; and Anglo-Saxon names like Nott, Nothey, Noad and Nutt arose'.
