The only spelling variant I have seen on people I know to be related to me is to have one "s" instead of two. This family came from Dom-Esch and Neukirchen (near Cologne) in Germany and settled in Wisconsin.Of course, that was 150 years ago and descendants have moved to different places.I am aware of cousins who moved to Oklahoma and then to Texas.I am not aware of anyone who went to Washington State, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. My immigrant ancestor Peter Nussbaum came over with wife, four sons and four daughters. All of the sons (Daniel, Jacob, Joseph, and William) had lots of children, grandchildren, etc. I don't think they changed the name spelling, though.
