The origan of the name NUSS is German. In doing some recent research into my NUSS line, I ran across a ships list that I think all of us who are descended from the NUSS line might be interested in. With this list there are actually two list...1. is from the Courthouse in Philadelphia...2. is the passanger list of the ship... but each gives added information. =============================================
September 1,1736
Courthouse of Philadelphia,PA
Harle(ship), of London, Ralph Harle, Master
Rotterdam, but last from Cows, as by the clearance thence,
Printed in "Colonial Records" Vol.IV pg.58F

Jacob Nuss age 20
Harle list:

Johann Jacob Nuss (No age, No family members listed)

One hundred fifty-one Foreigners from Palatinate and other places, who with their families, making in all 386 persons.
As I understand it, during this time period (around 1736) there was a great migration from Germany due to religious upheaval. The Germans of the Protestant faith were in danger of loosing their lives for turning away from the Orthodox Church. They were called "Palatines". Many of them made their way to Pennsylvania. This is where the name "Pennsylvania Dutch" origionated. I hope this has been of some help.
