In 1986, while stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington with the Army, my roommate returned from the library hysterical, insisting my name meant hog castrator. I challenged him, returned to the library, and in the Dictionary of American Family Names, I found him to be correct. My father disputed the book as a joke, but research proved that other family names had normal meanings. We're cursed.
