Here is everything I know or think I know about Richard Nuckols:
Richard H. NUCKOLS (NICKOLS, NUCKLES, KNUCKLES)
1. Albemarle County Marriages 1780-1853 by Vogt & Kethley says “Richard NUCKLES & Jane EUBANK 6 Dec 1837. Min-Edward Thomas, Dec 1837 [Marr. Reg. 1806-1868, fol. 30] b-George NUCKLES, who also affirms Jane over 21 wit-John T. Ford [B/C Papers, 1837-42]”
2. 1840 Census for Albemarle Co., VAShows Rich NUCKLES Age 20-30, living with one female, age 20-30 and one female, age under 5. Geo. NUCKLES apparently lived next door, age 20-30 with a female, age 20-30 and 1 female, age under 5 and 2 males, age under 5. (Note that George affirmed that Jane was over 21 when she married Rich.) Were Geo. and Rich. Brothers?
3. 1860 census shows Richard NUCKLES , age 46, (b. 1813/1814?) living with Jane NUCKLES, age 48, (b. 1811/1812?) and six children including Signora, age 11 in Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA. He was listed as a laborer and one person in the household over twenty could not read or write. Children:
Sarah J. 18
Silas H. 16
Mary E. 15
Wm. W. 13
Signora 11
Spottswood 6
(There may be a child over 20 - see 1840 census, above.)
4. 1900 census shows Richard H. NICKOLS, age 92, b. Mar 1808 living with Erastus C. and Martha S. ROOT in Buena Vista, VA. He is listed as a “Bo” - border?
5. Rockbridge County Virginia Marriages, 1851-1885 shows Erastus C. ROOT & Siagnora KNUCKLES on 17 Jan 1867. Father & Mother of the groom were Collum and Trecia ROOT. Of the bride were Richard and Jane KNUCKLES.
6. Rockbridge Co. Death Records lists Silas Hy NUCKOLS b. 10 Nov 1842 d. 5 Apr 1916 s/o Richd. H. NUCKOLS b. Richmond, VA and J. J. EUBANK b. Charlottesville, VA , E. S. NUCKOLS reptd. , bur Lex Cem.
Martha Signora Nuckols/Nuckles was my great grandmother.
Sandi says, “Children of Nathaniel Nuckols/Nuckles and Mary Polly Cary settled in Charlottesville, VA. Their son, George W. b 3/10/1816 married Mary Pauline Eubanks in Charlottesville 12/6/1837.” This made me think of the possibility that brothers married sisters but that is only a guess.
Letter from S. H. Nuckols to his cousin, Richard says “…I hold you all as berry near and dear relations as our fathers was (bro)thers and our mothers was (sis)ters making us double first cousins.” The word portions in parenthesis are missing from the copy of the letter I have.
The census for Amherst Co., VA for 1840 shows a Geo. W. Nuckles and an Obidiah Nuckles living side by side. Sandi says George W. is the son of Obidiah. This may not be the same George that I think could be Richard’s brother.
Oscer Nuckols says Richard’s son, Spottswood, is probably Fleming Spottswood Nuckols b 1854. He also thinks the child born abt. 1840 was Anna Maria Nuckols m. John Henry Beeton on 11/18/1857 in Rockbridge Co., VA.
