James Nowlin 1756 - 1844 SC & TN

I am looking for information on James Nowlin born 1756 James River area Virginia. In early life went to South Carolina, Fairfield District and then into Tennessee after 1800. I have a James Nowlin/Nolin who married a Mary in SC probably about 1820 and had a son named William in 1822 and maybe a daughter Temperance. Some time after this they moved to Wilson County Tennessee. Mary and James may have separated. James died in 1844. Information I seek concerns whether the James who died in 1844 is the James who was born in 1756, or was he a son? Was the James born in 1756 a son of one of the three original Nowlin's who came to Virginia in about 1700? Would be happy for any information.
