Wm. Nolin Book in Michigan
I have a book written by Wm. Nolin "The Bark Covered House; or Back in the Woods Again", written in the winter of 1875.Printed in Detroit 1876.`"A narrative of life in Michigan in 1834 and beyond".5th printing in 1973 by the Dearborn Historical Comm.Excerpt are as follows: Grandfather- Wm. Nolin was a Capt. in the Militia in New York; had a powder horn passed down thru 4 generations with a date June 30th, 1757 carved into it.Father-John Nowlin, Bn:1793 Putnam Co., N.Y. died:Dec. 4, 1869 Dearborn, Wayne Co., MIMother-Melinda Light Bn: 1802 Putnam Co., N.Y. Died: Jan. 2, 1873 Dearborn, MI. Married:abt. 1821 Putnam Co., N.Y.Both buried: Nowlin Cemetery, Dearborn, MI.(cemetery located north east of Telegraph Road and Van Born Road).John Nowlin owned 25 acres in the town of Kent, Putnam Co., N.Y. 60 miles from NYC.Sold it in 1832 to move his family to Michigan Territory.John came to MI on the steamer "Sheldon Thompson" abt.1832 to view and buy 80 acres in the town of Dearborn.In the Spring of 1834 he brought his family from Buffalo, N.Y. on the steamer "Michigan" to their new home in the wilderness (heavy woods).Children listed are:William who married Adelia Travis in 1843; daughter of Henry Travis & Harriet (Wescott) Travis who are buried in Oakgrove Cem., Taylor, MI.; bn:1823 DIED:Oct. 17, 1882 and second wife: Anna Crandell; John Smith Nowlin Bn: June 13, 1829 Putnam Co., N.Y., married twice,died:Nov. 14, 1902 Burlingame, Kansas; Betsey("Bessie")/B.B.Nowlin never married, died: Dec. 3, 1915, buried Nowlin Cem.; Sarah Nowlin,also buried in Nowlin Cem. married Michael Nowlin (same last name) and moved to Romeo, Mi.; Rachel Nowlin-sister;Abigail ("Abbie"/Abby)sister also buried Nowlin Cem.John Nowlin's mother, 3 sisters (only one listed as Mrs. N.Covey), 1 brother, and 1 uncle-Griffin Smith were living in Unadilla, NY in 1833.Melinda (Light) Nowlin had 2 sisters:Abigail Light md Geo. Purdy, Sarah Light (single) and brother Allen Light with wife Betsey are mentioned. The story tells how they and other pioneers forged a home and living from what was once a thick forest,dark and damp area into a civilized community. It's a very interesting book for those documenting the family tree.
