I have Asa Nowlen, Jr. going to and returning from Demerara as a passenger. I have American sea captains going out to Demerara as passengers when replacing an earlier Captain who died in Demerara. Similarly when sea captains returned as passengers from Demerara when their vessels were seized or condemned (crew dispersed to other vessels).
Asa Nowlen, Jr's going and returning (to me) suggests that either 1) he went out there to try to establish himself as the local commercial agent for the family trade or 2) as a representative for the family or other commercial interest in the local court in trying to collect on a protested financial instrument - bill of exchange, acceptance, etc. These suggestions I base only on the pattern of others without any real clue as to why he was there. If as a trader, his return would indicate things didn't work out; if attempting to collect through the courts (or settle before the courts got the case - penalties imposed by the courts were high), it's hard to say whether a few months stay indicated success or not.
Thanks for your information.
